According to Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO and founder of Facebook, his company has over 500 million members. He further states that more than half of them use Facebook every day. Additionally, he credits the recent, rapid growth of mobile internet access for an accelerating growth in his own business.
Zuckerberg shared these impressive metrics in a panel discussion at the Web 2.0 Summit with Tim O’Reilly and John Battelle.
With these potent metrics to support him, Zuckerberg claims that most industries will redesign themselves around their users’ social activity.
He then revealed that Facebook’s recently launched Groups product has been one of the fast growing products in the company’s history.
Photos, Groups, and Messages he emphasizes, as Facebook clearly demonstrates, help build products. Since Facebook’s products are inherently social and embedded in a social platform, people use them more frequently than more established services with similar features.
He insists the social element binds the features to a meaningful context that promotes more interest, and an immediate perception of value, in their use.
He foresees the company playing a major role in reshaping music, games, TV and vertical news sites on the road ahead.
Zuckerberg emphatically told companies without a social focus to, “Get on the bus.”
The new messaging system Facebook revealed only yesterday, unsurprisingly called Facebook Messages, represents the company’s vision for reinventing communication with an increased focus on its social aspects.
